CANBERRA – Joseph Hughes scored two goals and Jordan Gavin’s goal helped the CBR Brave beat the Newcastle Northstars 3-1 at the Phillip Swimming & Ice Skating Centre on Saturday evening.

The first goal for Hughes, a power play goal, was scored at 11:09 of the first period, with Wehebe Darge and Chris Leveille picking up the assists. Hughes scored his second goal at 13:00 of the third period, with Ainars Podzins and Casey Kubara picking up the assists.

Jordan Gavin scored the game winning goal at 4:56 of the 1st, assisted by Hughes and Channing Bresciani.

Robert Malloy scored the lone Newcastle goal at 4:05 of the first period, assisted by Nick Rivait and Joseph Harcharik.

Mat Hewitt was the winning goalie for CBR Brave, making 19 saves on 20 shots, for a Save Percentage of 0.950. Charlie Smart was the losing goalie for Newcastle Northstars, making 21 saves on 24 shots, for a Save Percentage of 0.875. Smart left the game at 19:34 of the third period for an extra attacker, but Newcastle could not take advantage with the additional player.
