
MELBOURNE – Aleksi Toivonen stopped all 23 shots he faced as the Melbourne Mustangs won over the Sydney Ice Dogs 2-0 at the O’Brien Group Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Brett Ferguson scored the game winning goal at 12:56 of the 1st, assisted by Brendan McDowell and Benjamin Davies.
There were fourteen minutes of penalties issued at 3:04 of the second period. Sydney’s Ellesse Carini and Melbourne Damian Bright got two minutes each for roughing, with Bright picking up and extra ten minute misconduct. At 14:21 of the third period, James Marino from the Ice Dogs and Brett Ferguson from the Mustangs each received two minutes for roughing, with Shannon McGregor getting a Game Misconduct.
Aleksi Toivonen was the winning goalie for Melbourne Mustangs, making 23 saves on 23 shots, for a Save Percentage of 1.000. Curtis Skip was the losing goalie for Sydney Ice Dogs, making 22 saves on 23 shots, for a Save Percentage of 0.957. Skip left the game at 17:30 of the third period as the Ice Dogs pushed to level the score. It backfired, as Nikita Kolesnikovs scored an empty net goal at 2:07 of the third period, assisted by Vadim Virjassov.
