MELBOURNE – Hat tricks to both Zane Jones and Richard Tesarik saw the Newcastle Northstars beat the Melbourne Mustangs 6-4 at the O’Brien Group Arena on Saturday evening.

The first goal for Jones was scored at 3:18 of the second period, with Robert Haselhurst and Joseph Harcharik picking up the assists. Jones’ second goal came at 16:18 of the third period, with Matthew Lindsay and Robert Malloy picking up the assists. Jones’ third goal, a short handed goal, came at 1:09 of the third period, with assists going to Robert Haselhurst and Nick Rivait.

Tesarik’s first goal was scored at 9:34 of the first period, with Robert Malloy getting the assist. The second goal for Tesarik came at 16:36 of the third period, with Sammy Banga and Joseph Harcharik picking up the assists. Tesarik’s third goal, an empty net goal, came at 0:01 of the third period unassisted.

Joseph Harcharik, Robert Malloy and Robert Haselhurst all got two assists for two points each.

Jamie Bourke’s first goal for the Mustangs came at 9:28 of the second period, with Mitchell Humphries and Brendan McDowell picking up the assists. Bourke scored his second goal at 4:54 of the third period, with McDowell getting the assist.

Mitchell Humphries scored one goal and one assist for two points, while Brendan McDowell got two assists for two points.

Dayne Davis was the winning goalie for Newcastle Northstars, making 35 saves on 39 shots, for a Save Percentage of 0.897. Aleksi Toivonen was the losing goalie for Melbourne Mustangs, making 19 saves on 24 shots, for a Save Percentage of 0.792. Toivonen left the game at 19:02 of the third period.
