MELBOURNE – Goals to Sammy Banga, Robert Haselhurst and Sam Lawson saw the Newcastle Northstars beat the Melbourne Ice 4-3 in a shootout at the O’Brien Group Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Banga opened the scoring for the Northstars at 14:14 of the second period, assisted by Joseph Harcharik and Richard Tesarik. Haselhurst added another goal at 3:25 of the second period, assisted by Nick Rivait and Patrick Nadin. At 1:02 of the second period, Lawson scored, from Tesarik and Robert Malloy.

Richard Tesarik got two assists for two points.

Tommy Powell’s first goal for the Ice came at 9:35 of the third period unassisted. Powell scored his second goal at 0:40 of the third period, with Dillon Lawrence and Devon Krogh picking up the assists.

Dayne Davis was the winning goalie for Newcastle Northstars, making 16 saves on 17 shots, for a Save Percentage of 0.941. Jaden Pine-Murphy was the losing goalie for Melbourne Ice, making 30 saves on 33 shots, for a Save Percentage of 0.909. Pine-Murphy left the game at 19:00 of the third period for an extra attacker. It worked, as Thomas Powell scored at 0:40 of the 3rd period, assisted by Dillon Lawrence and Devon Krogh.
