Gerling Leads The Way, Brave Win Over Mustangs

MELBOURNE – Two goals to Trevor Gerling and Casey Kubara helped the CBR Brave beat the Melbourne Mustangs 5-1 in the AIHL first semi final at the O’Brien Group Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Gerling’s first goal, a power play goal, came at 11:44 of the first period, with Channing Bresciani and Chris Leveille picking up the assists. Gerling scored his second goal, a short handed goal, at 10:12 of the second period, with Chris Leveille getting the assist.

Kubara scored his first goal, a power play goal, at 6:52 of the first period unassisted. The second goal for Kubara was scored at 1:51 of the second period, with Hayden Dawes getting the assist.

Chris Leveille got two assists for two points.

Brett Ferguson scored the lone Mustangs goal at 9:16 of the second period, assisted by Benjamin Davies and Michael McMahon.

Matt Hewitt was the winning goalie for CBR Brave, making 23 saves on 24 shots, for a Save Percentage of 0.958. Aleksi Toivonen was the losing goalie for Melbourne Mustangs, making 12 saves on 17 shots, for a Save Percentage of 0.706. Toivonen left the game at 18:35 of the third period.
